6/27/2023 0 Comments People love dead jews by dara hornIn these essays, Horn reflects on subjects as far-flung as the international veneration of Anne Frank, the mythology that Jewish family names were changed at Ellis Island, the blockbuster traveling exhibition Auschwitz, the marketing of the Jewish history of Harbin, China, and the little-known life of the "righteous Gentile" Varian Fry. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture - and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly anti-Semitic attacks - Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: She was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones. Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. A startling and profound exploration of how Jewish history is exploited to comfort the living.

What matters here is what is being said – or, often more accurately, what is not being said. Dolan’s pared-back style is reminiscent of Rooney’s eschewal of all extraneous scene-setting. But in this particular instance, there is something in the appraisal. Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan, published by W&NĪny young, female Irish novelist writing about millennials is inevitably going to find herself compared to Sally Rooney. When Julian returns, Ava finds herself torn between them. While he is gone, she starts spending time with Edith, and history all but repeats itself – only she and Edith aren’t just sleeping together, they’re falling in love, too. Just as they’ve begun to heal, Kyra comes back to rip open their wounds with riveting and heartbreaking results that the author explores with great success. The book’s strength lies more in the first half than the second, as Kyra and her family cope with the extraordinary circumstances thrust upon them. The second half pokes around the greater mystery of where Kyra’s been by turning the book into a plot-point machine and setting up a larger universe that will surely be explored in coming installments. Character drives the first half as Kyra reassembles the pieces of her life and discovers that family and friends have moved on with their own. The book is separated into two distinct halves. Derting ( The Offering, 2013, etc.) kicks off a new series about a teen softball star who disappears one night after the big game and returns five years later with no memory of where she’s been. The book is in very good condition with very light wear, faded spine, and a bit of spotting, and some spots of discoloration on the margins of a few pages (see image), no dustwrapper and probably not issed with one as this was published for the juvenile market (you know before it went all upscale, and became the 'Y.A. This leads us to believe that Sandburg too must have wanted to use the form of the haiku to speak about some aspect of modernist life. The faces in the underground metro station had seemed spectral and ghostly to him, for none of them were talking to each other. Now, Pound had used the haiku to depict the solitude and anomie of common man in the modernist era. However, we can argue that this is not such a major extension and that in any case each of his lines is very short much shorter than any line in Pound’s haiku in fact. The only way in which Sandburg departs from a traditional haiku as well as the haiku of Pound is to extend its length from 3 lines to 6 lines. These are both dissimilar things, yet their comparison seems apt to us, as it had in Pound’s poem as well. He compares the fog with the concrete image of a cat. Sandburg also makes use of extended metaphor in the same way in this poem “Fog”. Thus, he had evoked a concrete image of the natural world to describe something he had seen in the urban cityscape of the 20 th century. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Breeder by Casey HaysJohn and Becky Blaes, JB Premier Pets.Creekside Kennel, Oberlin Kansas – 258 adult breeding dogs!.Judy Maasen, J Maasen Inc – Rock Valley Iowa – 390 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: dogs with open wounds/injuries and the owner listing “gunshot in brain at close range”.David and Esther Troyer, Clark Missouri – 53 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: using dirty needles to give medicine, filthy kennels, filthy enclosures, excessive matting, open wounds, and the list keeps going. This information was obtained based off of the tags on each puppy cage.
